Not every puncture requires a new tyre. But some do. Here's how to know the difference — and what a mobile tyre specialist will look for when they assess your damage.
Getting a puncture is frustrating enough. Being told you need a full replacement when you were hoping for a quick repair can feel like a nasty surprise. Here's a straightforward guide to understanding when repair is possible — and when it isn't.
When Can a Puncture Be Repaired?
British Standard BS AU 159 sets clear guidelines on when a tyre can be safely repaired. In general, a repair is possible when:
- The puncture is in the central three-quarters of the tread area (not the sidewall or shoulder)
- The hole is no larger than 6mm in diameter
- The tyre hasn't been run flat (driven on while deflated)
- There is no secondary damage to the sidewall, bead, or internal structure
If all these conditions are met, a professional tyre repair involves removing the tyre from the rim, cleaning and inspecting the inside, applying a combination plug-patch from the inside, and re-mounting the tyre. Done correctly, this repair is permanent and safe.
When Does a Tyre Need Replacing?
If the puncture is in the sidewall or shoulder of the tyre, replacement is mandatory — no exceptions. A sidewall repair is not safe because this area of the tyre flexes constantly and cannot hold a reliable repair.
Similarly, if the tyre has been driven on while flat, the internal structure is likely compromised even if the sidewall looks intact. The heat generated by running a flat tyre damages the rubber and the casing in ways that aren't always visible.
What Will a Mobile Technician Do?
When you call for mobile tyre fitting or puncture repair, the technician will assess the damage before recommending a course of action. They'll remove the tyre, inspect the inside, and give you an honest recommendation. If repair is safe, they'll repair it on the spot. If replacement is necessary, they'll fit a new tyre from the van's stock.
