Run-flat tyres sound like the perfect solution — no spare needed, keep driving after a puncture. But there are important trade-offs to understand before you commit.
Run-flat tyres (RFTs) have become standard fitment on many premium cars from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Mini, among others. They're designed to keep you mobile after a puncture — typically at speeds up to 50mph for up to 50 miles. The appeal is obvious, but the reality is more nuanced.
How Run-Flat Tyres Work
Standard tyres are essentially air-filled tubes held between a rubber casing and a wheel rim. When punctured, the air escapes and the tyre collapses. Run-flat tyres have reinforced sidewalls that are rigid enough to temporarily support the vehicle's weight even with zero air pressure. This allows you to reach a place of safety or a tyre fitter without immediately stopping.
The Benefits
The main benefit is safety and convenience. There's no need to change a tyre at the roadside — a particularly significant advantage for lone drivers, in bad weather, or in unsafe locations. Most vehicles fitted with run-flats don't include a spare tyre, saving weight and boot space.
The Trade-Offs
Run-flat tyres cost significantly more than standard equivalents — typically 30–50% more. They also provide a harsher ride, as the stiff sidewalls transmit more road noise and vibration. And because they can't always be repaired after running flat (the internal structure may be damaged even if it looks intact), the cost of replacement can be high.
Can You Fit Standard Tyres on a Run-Flat Car?
Yes — in most cases. But if your vehicle lacks a spare, you'll need to carry a tyre inflation kit or ensure you have access to emergency tyre fitting if you suffer a puncture. Our mobile tyre fitting service covers this scenario perfectly.
Our Recommendation
If your vehicle came with run-flats and you value peace of mind, stick with them. But if you're price-conscious and your vehicle can accommodate a spare, standard tyres with access to a reliable 24 hour call out service is a very sensible alternative.
