When Should You Replace Your Tyres? 7 Warning Signs to Watch For

Worn or damaged tyres are one of the leading causes of road accidents in the UK. Here are seven signs that it's time to book a mobile tyre fitting appointment.

The legal minimum tread depth for car tyres in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around its full circumference. At that point, your braking performance is significantly compromised. But ideally, you should be replacing tyres well before they reach the legal limit.

Here are seven signs your tyres need replacing:

1. Tread Depth Below 3mm The legal minimum is 1.6mm, but most tyre safety experts recommend replacing at 3mm. The difference in wet-weather braking between 3mm and 1.6mm is significant — we're talking several extra metres at 70mph.

2. Visible Cracks in the Sidewall Fine lines on the sidewall indicate the rubber is beginning to dry out and perish. This can lead to sudden failure, especially at speed or in hot weather.

3. Bulges or Blisters A bulge in the sidewall is a serious warning sign. It usually means the internal structure has been damaged — often by a pothole or kerb strike — and the tyre is at risk of blowing out without warning.

4. Vibration at Speed While vibration can have many causes, worn or unevenly worn tyres are a common culprit. If you notice unusual vibration above 40mph, get your tyres inspected.

5. Persistent Slow Punctures If you're topping up air in the same tyre regularly, it's either a valve issue or a slow puncture. Neither should be ignored.

6. Age — Even Without Obvious Wear Rubber degrades over time regardless of mileage. Most manufacturers recommend replacing tyres after five to seven years, even if they look fine visually.

7. The Tread Wear Indicators Modern tyres have small rubber bars moulded into the tread grooves. When your tread wears down to the same level as these bars, it's time to replace. Check them regularly.

If you spot any of these signs, book mobile tyre fitting and we'll come to you — no need to limp to a garage on a compromised tyre.
